Happy 25th anniversary StepChange
We’re celebrating our 25th birthday today! To celebrate, we’ve put together a video with some of our colleagues about the work we do.
It’s only a couple of minutes long and will help you to see why we’re so proud of everything we’ve achieved over the last quarter of a century.
It all started in 1993…
We started life as the Consumer Credit Counselling Service on 25 January 1993. The idea sprang out of a conversation in a pub between two friends.
We’ve gone from an idea scribbled on the back of a beer mat to an organisation that’s helped over 5 million people with their debts. Times (and fashions) have changed in the last 25 years, but the need for our service hasn’t diminished.
Our colleagues make us who we are

Dom made a difference
The video also shows the impact our work has on our clients’ lives. In Dom’s first week working at StepChange, he talked to someone who had been experiencing suicidal feelings. Talking to Dom about her debt had been enough to make her feel differently, which brought home to him the value of the help and support we offer.
This story will be familiar to many of our advisors. We know that debt and mental health are linked, and it’s important to seek help if you’re struggling with either.
Looking towards the future…
We’re taking a moment on our 25th anniversary to sit back and admire what we’ve done in the last quarter of a century. But we’re looking to the future too.
We know that people need our help now more than ever. We’re working hard behind the scenes to improve our services so we can help even more people in the next 25 years and beyond. We’d love to tell you more, but it’s all top secret for now!
