Four last minute Mother’s Day gift ideas

Ah, Mum. There’s no one quite like her, and every year we promise we’ll make Mother’s Day a really special day for her…

But every year most of us make that same desperate dash to the shops or the petrol station on Sunday morning, looking around in despair at the gutted card racks and the distinct lack of flowers.

last minute Mother’s Day gift ideas

The problem with Mother’s Day is that it’s one of those sneaky holidays. It seems to creep up on you just as you start to get over Valentine’s Day and instead drool for Easter eggs.

Never fear! Your trusty friends at MoneyAware have put together a little cheat sheet of cheap and cheerful YouTube ideas to make your Mum’s special day extra special.

Make her a paper bouquet

We found this hand-crafted bouquet of Lilies by Crafty Baby to be exceptionally lovely. You don’t need to be an origami expert in order to make this gift as this video will give you a step-by-step guide, from stem to petal.

The Mother’s Day magic box

Sure, you could get your Mum any old card from the supermarket…or you could make her a magic mother’s day box following the tutorial by Stamping with Princess. Simply follow the tutorial and away you go!

Let her get her beauty sleep

This day is about making Mum feel pampered and relaxed, so even if you’re low on funds you can still do something to let her chill out.

Tidy up downstairs so she can have a lie in upstairs, make her breakfast in bed, peg the washing out, walk the dog, whatever you can do to make this day easier on her is sure to go a long way. Best of all? It’s free!

Make a gift basket from scratch

Here’s a video from AidaCandies showing you how to make your very own gift basket. This is such an easy idea that you’ll be tempted to make a gift basket for everyone (don’t forget about us!).

All you need is a medium size wicker basket (you can get these very cheaply at garden centres or charity shops), cellophane wrap (available at most craft shops) some pastel coloured shredded paper to stuff into the basket and a yard or so of colourful ribbon.

Now comes the fun part. You can pretty much put anything in your gift basket so long as you haven’t opened it and it looks reasonably pretty or cute. Check out our list of gift basket items, some that you might even have lying about the house:

  • Miniature tubes of bubble bath / moisturiser / shampoo
  • Cheap, nice smelling soaps
  • Cosy socks
  • Hot chocolate sachets
  • A bottle of wine
  • A little tin of biscuits
  • Herbal teas
  • Mixed nuts / popcorn / snacks
  • Chocolates
  • A DVD of a rom-com
  • Cotton hankies (clean ones still in their packaging!)
